ABOUT FOSTERING

An estimated 250,000 healthy cats and dogs are euthanased every year in Australia.

Since we opened our doors in May 2017, we have saved over 500 cats and more than 700 dogs. We know that can’t save all of them on our own, but with you, we can save at least one more.

Will you help us?

WHAT IS FOSTERING?

Happy Tails Animal Rescue doesn’t have any kennels or animal holding facilities. Instead, the animals that we save are placed into care with a wonderful person we call a foster carer. Some of these animals just need a place to stay while they look for their forever home… others need a special human to teach them manners, nurse them back to health, or help them trust and know love again.

There is a lot of reasons why people choose to foster, be it that they’re searching for the perfect companion, or just want to help animals in need. Our foster carers are our life blood. Each one is a treasured and valued member of the team and without them we would simply cease to exist!

WE PROVIDE FOSTER CARERS WITH…

ALL VET WORK

Everything from routine checkups, vaccinations, and desexing, through to major health complications and operations. Foster carers are NEVER asked to pay the vet bills for animals in their care!

WORM & FLEA PREVENTATIVES

All Happy Tails animals in care are required to recieve regular preventative treatment against worms and fleas. This is 100% covered for by Happy Tails.

DONATED PET FOOD

(when available)

Whilst we cannot guarantee it, Happy Tails will almost always have donated pet food available for carers who request it. Ask your coordinator about food donations and they will be happy to help.

OTHER DONATED PET PRODUCTS

(when available)

Happy Tails will often receive donations of other pet products, such as toys, bedding, food bowls, etc. We gladly pass on to carers that need them.

Ultimately, we try to ensure that our foster carers are as little out of pocket as possible. When any costs are incurred by our carers, these are also tax deductible.

WE ASK OUR FOSTER CARERS TO PROVIDE…

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

The most basic requirement for becoming a foster carer is having place a foster animal can stay while looking for their forever home… somewhere they will be safe and looked after, with a belly full of food and a soft bed inside to sleep on.

TRANSPORT

Happy Tails requires all foster carers to have a valid Australian drivers license. Carers are expected to transport their animals to and from vet appointments or wherever else they need to go.

ENRICHMENT

Just like humans, animals can develop mental health issues when they have nothing to do for extended periods of time. Foster carers are expected to provide regular exercise and enrichment for animals in care to ensure they are happy and healthy.

LOVE AND PATIENCE

Some animals coming into care will have a difficult background. They will likely be scared, and may have some medical or behavioural problems. We ask our carers for lots of love and patience while they adjust to a better life.
